Customer Spotlight: Dennis Johnson, The Party Store

Dennis's Journey: From Small Beginnings to Event Rental Magnate

Dennis's foray into the event rental industry began at the age of 14, setting up for another local tent company. Little did he know, this early experience would sow the seeds for a thriving business venture. By the time he turned 18, Dennis had already taken a significant leap, purchasing 80 round tables and 500 poly chairs, carving his path in the industry. Operating out of a modest 20'x30' storage unit, he laid the foundation for what would become a formidable enterprise.

Fast forward to the present, and Dennis's empire has grown exponentially. With a staggering inventory boasting seats for over 5,000, 24+ table styles, and approximately 100,000 square feet of tenting, his business has become a cornerstone of the event rental scene in the Flathead Valley. Yet, even with a sprawling 36,000 square foot shop, space remains a coveted commodity.

Navigating Montana's Seasonal Landscape

Montana's seasonal market presents unique challenges, particularly in the winter months. However, Dennis has mastered the art of staying busy year-round. Despite the historically short event window, which once spanned from June to August, the season now extends from April to October. To carve out time for his beloved hunting expeditions, Dennis strategically schedules limited fall events. In the off-season, he indulges in pursuits like hunting, fishing, and camping with his family, all while overseeing a dedicated team of 18 year round staff members.

Fueling Growth Through Innovation

Dennis's success can be attributed to his forward-thinking approach and unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction. By anticipating local market trends and embracing custom creations, he stays steps ahead of the competition. From Tidewater Sailcloths to bespoke event solutions, Dennis's willingness to innovate has propelled his business to new heights. With the largest event rental inventory in the region, including sub-flooring options and custom-built features, he ensures each event is truly an unforgettable experience.

The introduction of Tidewater Tents has been a game-changer for Dennis's business. Embraced by high-end clients and planners alike, these tents have become synonymous with sophistication and style. Dennis initially hesitated to adopt them but was won over by Aztec's engineered version, recognizing their transformative impact on event aesthetics.

A Glimpse Into the Challenges & Triumphs

While no single job stands out as the ultimate test, each presents its own set of hurdles and rewards. From executing intricate setups in record time, to orchestrating month-long productions in remote locations, Dennis and his team thrive on the adrenaline rush of event execution. The culmination of meticulous planning and tireless dedication culminates in the satisfaction of seeing a vision come to life.

Outlook for the Year Ahead

As the season kicks into high gear, Dennis anticipates a whirlwind of activity. With bookings overflowing and demand soaring, the outlook for the year is nothing short of "F*!$ing Crazy." However, the growth trajectory is not without its challenges. A local labor shortage looms large, underscoring the need for reliable, hardworking individuals to sustain operations. In today's competitive labor market, retaining employees is paramount. While they offer competitive compensation to our crews, they also emphasize the importance of maintaining a strong work ethic and proactive mindset. Cultivating a positive and enjoyable atmosphere in the workplace is a priority for us, and they’re pleased to see it yielding positive results in terms of employee satisfaction and retention.

The Importance of Partnership

For Dennis, the decision to continue investing in Aztec Tent products boils down to one key factor: Nick Longino. With a deep understanding of the industry and a hands-on approach, Nick serves as more than just a sales representative; he's a trusted partner who prioritizes the needs of our business, and backed by a strong team at Aztec, fulfilling high quality product when they say they will.

Dennis's journey from humble beginnings to a trusted high-end events resource is a testament to the power of passion, innovation, and strategic partnerships. As he navigates the ever-evolving landscape of the event rental industry, one thing remains certain: the sky's the limit for Dennis and his team.

Frame Tents

Frame Tents feature a skeleton of aluminum framework and steel connectors to support the tent top. Although this style of tent is "free-standing" by design, it still must be anchored to resist wind forces. All styles of frame tents have no poles that come to the ground in the interior space of the tent.

Pole Tents

Pole tents rely on tension in the membrane to hold the shape of the tent system. These tents are supported by single or multiple centerpoles in the middle of the tent area and a series of sidepoles around the perimeter of the tent area. The tent is tensioned toward the anchoring locations commonly with a rope or ratchet strap.
